Adam Peaty-Ramsay's mother Caroline has indicated she is ready to build bridges with her son following his bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games this weekend, as his pregnant wife Holly cheered him on. The swimmer's emotional speech after the race sparked a reaction from his estranged mum, who shared a message on Instagram suggesting forgiveness.
Different Upbringings Collide
Adam and Holly Peaty-Ramsay, who are expecting their first child together, came from vastly different backgrounds. Adam, 31, grew up in modest circumstances as the son of a Lidl caretaker and a nursery manager. Neighbours raised funds to pay for petrol so he could attend swimming practice. Holly, daughter of chef Gordon Ramsay, who is worth an estimated £152 million, enjoyed a life of luxury.
The couple married last December, but the wedding sparked a major fallout between Adam and Holly and the Peaty family. The Peatys were banned from attending except for Adam's sister Bethany, after a dispute over Caroline not being invited to Holly's hen party. The feud deepened with public remarks on social media and in the press.
Emotional Commonwealth Games Bronze
During the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Adam admitted the family feud had taken a toll on his career. After winning bronze, he said: "It's hard because I know how hard I work. I know the s*** I've been through, which is no fault of my own, but it does take its toll." He was defeated by Australian Sam Williamson and 18-year-old Filip Nowacki from Jersey.
He added: "I'm not crying because it's bronze instead of gold. I'm crying because I know I am better than that. I feel like I couldn't have put any more in and that's where it hurts, because I'm like 'What's the point of all the metres every day, what's the point of being exhausted all the time? What's the point of having to say no to family events because you can't go to training'? It has to mean something and for me it has to be human excellence and that is not excellence for me. So that's the emotion that is unfortunately coming out."
Mother's Olive Branch
Caroline Peaty responded on Instagram with a black and white photo of Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders, captioned: "I forgive people but that doesn't mean I accept their behaviour or trust them. I forgive them for me, so I can let go and move on with my life." She admitted speaking to a newspaper early in the fallout but said she has not talked about him publicly since, hinting she is ready to rebuild bridges.
In a statement, she shared: "We continue to support Adam from afar. He's our son who we love, whom we supported to reach his aspirations. Our love, our time, our sacrifices were given freely with no expectation of financial reward just genuinely given with the love as any mother and father would do for their child."
Caroline and Adam's dad Mark were not in the stands for his race. The couple had made significant sacrifices, including getting up at 4 am to drive Adam to training and holding down full-time jobs while supporting his swimming dreams. Adam previously told The Guardian: "My mum worked on the other side of Stoke, and I trained in Derby. That is a big journey."
Family Tensions Remain
Despite Caroline's conciliatory message, a family source told The Daily Mail that other relatives are less willing to forgive. The insider claimed Adam was "playing the blame game now" and "woe is me" card, adding: "Just take accountability for your own actions for once, Adam, instead of blaming us. The hurt you feel over a medal does not compare to the hurt your mother felt when she said she did not want to be on this planet any more… The hurt you inflicted on her when you stopped her from seeing her grandson [from a previous relationship] out of spite, who she loves with every fibre of her being, and stopped from watching you marry."
Adam, who now uses the surname Peaty-Ramsay after taking his wife's name, called his bronze medal "bittersweet" in an Instagram post. He shared a photo kissing Holly, who is pregnant with their first child, and vowed to "keep fighting, learning, adapting and striving for excellence until I can no longer give anymore." He added: "To the people out there who want to hurt me and my family with comments, I have seen this story a thousand times with other athletes from many sports. We are athletes, doing something we love and that is our deepest passion. As it's said, be the change you want to see in the world, and, I want a better world for the next generation of athletes. Love always wins."
