The head coach of the men's lacrosse team at Siena University is in hospital with a severe traumatic brain injury following a serious accident at his family home.
A Tragic Accident at Home
Liam Gleason, the 41-year-old head coach, sustained his injuries on November 30th after falling down a flight of stairs at his property in Halfmoon, New York. He has remained in hospital since the incident, with his family confirming the severity of his condition.
In a statement shared with the press, Siena University's athletics department acknowledged the accident. 'Men's lacrosse head coach Liam Gleason was involved in a serious accident yesterday and has been hospitalised,' the statement read. The university requested privacy for the Gleason family and asked for thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Community Rallies with Overwhelming Support
To assist with the mounting medical expenses, the Gleason family established a GoFundMe campaign. The response from the community, the lacrosse world, and the public has been profound, with donations exceeding $400,000.
The fundraiser's description paints a picture of a beloved figure, calling Gleason 'the best father, husband, brother, son, brother-in-law, uncle, coach, and friend.' It notes, 'His heart is as big as his 6'5" frame, and the love he gives to those around him is immeasurable.'
The campaign has drawn support from across the sporting community. Notably, John Danowski, the head coach of Duke University's men's lacrosse team, donated $500, stating his contribution was due to the tight-knit nature of the 'lacrosse brotherhood.'
Gleason's Career and Family
A Long Island native, Liam Gleason returned to Siena University as head coach in June 2018, having previously served as an assistant coach there from 2008 to 2010. He is married to former collegiate footballer Jaclyn Rosada, and the couple have three children together.
The accident occurred just before his 41st birthday, which fell on the Friday following the incident. The family continues to request privacy as they focus on his recovery, supported by an outpouring of generosity that underscores the high regard in which he is held.
