Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City have confirmed the appointment of Raphael Wicky as their new head coach. The Swiss manager takes over from the long-serving Peter Vermes, who was relieved of his duties in October after a disappointing season.
A New Era for Sporting KC
The club announced the move on Sunday, marking a significant shift in leadership. Wicky, a former Swiss international midfielder, has signed a contract that will see him lead the team through the 2026 MLS season, with the club holding an option for 2027.
Sporting KC's decision comes after they finished bottom of the Western Conference in 2025, a performance that ended Peter Vermes's 16-year tenure. The search for a successor has now concluded with the 47-year-old Wicky, who is familiar with the American soccer landscape.
Wicky's Coaching Pedigree
Raphael Wicky is no stranger to MLS, having previously managed the Chicago Fire from 2020 to 2021. His coaching career also includes a stint in Europe with Swiss Super League side FC Basel, where he won the Swiss Cup in 2019.
His most recent role was as an assistant coach for the United States men's national team, a position he held from 2023. This experience within the US soccer system was likely a key factor in his appointment by Sporting Kansas City's sporting director, Gavin Wilkinson.
Building for the Future
In his first statements, Wicky expressed his honour at joining a club with Sporting KC's stature and history. He acknowledged the hard work ahead, stating the immediate focus is on preparing the squad for the upcoming 2026 MLS campaign.
The club's leadership has signalled a clear desire for a fresh start. With Wicky's blend of MLS knowledge and international experience, the aim will be to rebuild a competitive team and return to the playoffs, a stage they have missed in recent seasons.
This appointment is seen as a crucial first step in a broader restructuring process for Sporting Kansas City as they look to climb back up the Western Conference table and re-establish themselves as contenders in Major League Soccer.
