Former world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder dramatically stormed out of a live radio interview on Wednesday after refusing to engage with questions about his long-time rival Tyson Fury. The explosive incident occurred during a TalkSport segment hosted by Simon Jordan, just ahead of Wilder's scheduled press conference with British veteran Derek Chisora.
Interview Erupts Over Fury Line of Questioning
The American boxer, known as the "Bronze Bomber," made his position clear from the outset when Jordan broached the subject of Fury. "I don't want to talk about him," Wilder stated firmly, to which Jordan responded, "No, you're going to." This exchange quickly escalated the tension in the studio.
Wilder pushed back emphatically, declaring: "We're here about Derek Chisora. We're not gonna talk about him [Fury] at all. I'm not gonna talk about him at all. Understand that." Despite Jordan's attempts to cool the atmosphere by saying "No, fair enough," the damage was already done. Wilder continued: "Alright then, so let's move on. It's all about Derek Chisora, that's it. I'm back, baby!"
Historical Rivalry Resurfaces
The friction stems from Wilder's controversial history with Fury, which includes three epic battles between 2018 and 2021. Their first encounter in 2018 ended in a disputed draw, followed by Fury securing decisive victories in their 2020 and 2021 rematches to claim the WBC heavyweight title. Wilder has repeatedly accused Fury of cheating during their trilogy, allegations Fury has consistently denied.
Jordan referenced these accusations during the interview, mentioning Wilder's past claims about "water being spiked" and a "long count" by the referee. When Jordan suggested that making such accusations seemed "flaky," Wilder shouted back: "Because I know the truth! I have the facts. Understand that [...] Because when the documentary and everything starts to come out, I'm gonna show everything."
Upcoming Chisora Bout Takes Centre Stage
Wilder's immediate focus remains firmly on his scheduled fight against Derek Chisora at London's O2 Arena on 4 April. This bout represents a significant moment for both fighters, marking the 50th professional contest for each man. For Chisora, this is expected to be his final appearance in the ring before retirement.
The British veteran, aged 42, enters the contest on a positive run of form with three consecutive victories. In contrast, Wilder finds himself in must-win territory after a mixed record in recent outings. The 40-year-old American has won two and lost four of his last six fights, including defeats to Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker.
Security Intervenes as Tensions Peak
The interview reached its breaking point when Jordan stated, "I'm not a Fury fan," prompting Wilder to stand up from his chair and advance toward the host. Security personnel quickly intervened to hold back the agitated boxer as Wilder shouted: "I don't give a f*** about that! I said we didn't want to bring him up in the first place. It ain't got s*** to do with him!"
This dramatic exit underscores the lingering animosity between Wilder and Fury, even as both fighters prepare for separate upcoming contests. Fury himself is scheduled to emerge from his fifth retirement to face Arslanbek Makhmudov on 11 April, just one week after Wilder's bout with Chisora.
The incident highlights how past rivalries can overshadow current preparations in the high-stakes world of heavyweight boxing. Wilder's determination to focus exclusively on his imminent challenge against Chisora reflects the critical importance of this encounter for his career trajectory, while simultaneously demonstrating how historical grievances continue to simmer beneath the surface of the sport's biggest personalities.
