Scott Lincoln Targets European Glory in Birmingham

British shot-put champion Scott Lincoln has set his sights on European glory in Birmingham this summer, vowing to deliver a memorable performance for the home crowd. The 33-year-old secured his record-extending 12th outdoor national title at the Novuna UK Athletics Championships with a throw of 20.33m, nearly two metres ahead of runner-up Piers Cameron.

Historic Achievement in Tokyo

Lincoln made history at the World Championships in Tokyo last year by finishing eighth, the best-ever result by a British shot-putter at the event. Now, he is determined to add a continental medal to his collection, with the European Championships taking place at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham—a venue where he has enjoyed significant success.

In early June, Lincoln threw 21.16m in Germany, surpassing the European Championships qualification standard of 20.80m. This performance has bolstered his confidence as he prepares for the competition.

Home Crowd Advantage

Reflecting on his goals, Lincoln said: “I want to go in to win it. It’s as simple as that. I’ve got a few weeks, and a couple more competitions leading into it. Obviously, the Commonwealth Games are a big memory coming into it. I’ll make sure I’m ready for the Europeans and I’ll put on a show.”

Lincoln won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and he hopes to replicate that success. “I’m looking forward to it. The crowd are going to be amazing. To be at a home Games again here will be great. I have very special memories from the Commonwealth Games in 2022. I just want to go out there and put on the performance that I should do for the home crowd,” he added.

National Champion Streak

With his indoor titles included, Lincoln is now a 22-time national champion, a tally so impressive that he admits he has lost count. “I could only account for eight or nine. My mum can account for the rest of them. It is always nice to compete in front of a British crowd; it really hypes me up ready for European Championships,” he said.

Despite challenges with the newly laid throwing circle at the national championships, Lincoln adapted by switching to trainers for better grip. “They have re-laid the circle, so a lot of us were struggling. I ended up throwing in my trainers to get a better grip, which is disappointing because I like to put on a show and make shot put an exciting event to watch,” he explained.
