Nigerian police have charged Anthony Joshua's driver with causing death by dangerous driving following a road accident that killed two members of the boxer's team. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was also charged with driving without a valid licence and driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and property damage.
The crash occurred on 29 December on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in south-west Nigeria. Kayode was driving a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua, his personal trainer Latif Ayodele, and strength coach Sina Ghami. The vehicle was travelling at high speed when a tyre burst while overtaking, causing it to collide with a stationary lorry illegally parked on the hard shoulder. Ayodele and Ghami, both 36, died at the scene.
The Federal Road Safety Corps said the vehicle was travelling beyond the legal speed limit. Joshua and Kayode survived with minor injuries; Kayode was hospitalised for two days. Joshua later visited the funeral home with his mother to pay respects. The driver, a longstanding member of Joshua's team, was granted bail of 5 million naira (£2,580) but remains in custody pending bail conditions. He is due in court on 20 January.
The accident occurred ten days after Joshua's victory over YouTuber Jake Paul in the US. He had been preparing for a return to the ring early this year. Ogun state government confirmed Joshua and another passenger were evacuated to a medical facility in Lagos, where doctors found them stable and not requiring emergency intervention.
