He was hospitalised at approximately 8:38pm on Friday after receiving immediate medical attention from staff present at the event. Despite these efforts, his condition deteriorated, and he was pronounced dead at 12:01am on Saturday. Local police have now opened a death investigation to determine the exact circumstances.

The event's promoter, Joe Goyita, shared his profound grief in a heartfelt Facebook statement. He expressed it was a post he had hoped never to make, confirming that Johnson collapsed towards the end of his contest.
