Katie Taylor Confirms Retirement Plans with Final Dublin Fight
Irish boxing icon Katie Taylor has officially revealed her intention to retire from professional boxing following one last bout scheduled for this summer in Dublin. The 39-year-old undisputed super lightweight world champion, who successfully defended her title against Amanda Serrano in a thrilling trilogy fight in New York last July, is now setting her sights on a grand farewell in front of her home fans.
Dreaming of an Iconic Croke Park Send-Off
Taylor has expressed a strong desire to stage her retirement fight at the legendary Croke Park, an iconic venue that holds significant cultural and sporting importance in Ireland. While specific details regarding her opponent and the exact date remain unconfirmed, the champion is hopeful that this historic stadium can host her final professional appearance.
"We are still trying to figure the details out, but I do have one more fight this year," Taylor told RTE Sport. "It is kind of like my retirement fight. It has been an amazing journey, the whole lot of it, over these last 20 years. That’s what we’re hoping and preparing for, to have one last fight. It is going to be an amazing celebration."
Exploring Alternative Venues in Dublin
Recognising potential logistical challenges, Taylor has acknowledged that other venues in Dublin could serve as suitable alternatives if Croke Park proves unavailable. The 3Arena, where she has fought previously, and the Aviva Stadium are both viable options for this momentous occasion.
"I just want to fight in Dublin to end my career. Obviously we are still hoping for Croke Park, hanging on to a bit of hope that it can happen," she explained. "If it doesn’t happen, there are plenty of options there. I have obviously fought in the 3Arena a couple of times, the Aviva Stadium is also there. Croke Park would be top of the list."
A Remarkable Conclusion to a Stellar Career
Taylor emphasised the symbolic importance of concluding her two-decade-long professional journey in Ireland's most iconic sporting arena. "Fighting my last fight in our most iconic arena, how special would that be? I think it would be absolutely remarkable if I was able to do that. I’m not sure if it is going to happen or not," she stated.
Regardless of the final venue selection, Taylor remains enthusiastic about ending her illustrious career on home soil. "Either way, I’ll be ending my career here and I’m very, very excited about that." This summer's fight promises to be a celebratory event marking the conclusion of an extraordinary boxing legacy that has inspired countless fans worldwide.
