Irish boxer Glenn Byrne has been compelled to retire from the sport after sustaining a bleed on the brain during a fight earlier this month. The 29-year-old Dubliner suffered the first defeat of his professional career against William Crolla, the younger brother of former WBA lightweight champion Anthony Crolla, on a Matchroom bill at Planet Ice in Altrincham.
Fight Details
In the super-welterweight contest, Byrne knocked down the Manchester fighter four times, three of which occurred in the second round. Many observers believed the bout should have been halted in Byrne's favour at that juncture. However, the match was allowed to continue, and Crolla delivered a devastating knockout in the seventh round, improving his professional record to 10-1. Byrne's record now stands at 7-1-1 following his maiden loss.
Medical Aftermath
After receiving treatment in the ring, Byrne was rushed to hospital. He has now confirmed that he is no longer medically cleared to compete. Reflecting on his condition, Byrne acknowledged he is very fortunate that his injuries were not more severe. He took to Instagram to announce his retirement, stating: "The journey has come to an end. Not in the way I ever wanted, but unfortunately after my last fight I am no longer medically cleared to compete. The damage I suffered resulted in a bleed on my brain, and doctors have advised me not to continue fighting. I'm devastated, to say the least, but I'm also very fortunate that my injuries weren't worse and that I'm in good health."
Career Reflections
Byrne looked back on his career with pride, noting his record of nine fights, seven wins, one draw, and one loss. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities he received, including fighting at iconic venues such as the 3Arena, SSE Arena, Ulster Hall, Manchester, and the National Stadium. He also highlighted the privilege of fighting live on television multiple times and co-main eventing on a Matchroom card.
Byrne started boxing as a hobby but always gave 100% to the sport. He thanked his coach Jay Byrne for believing in him and helping create opportunities, as well as his girlfriend Shannon for her sacrifices and support. He also acknowledged contributions from others in his team, including Stigabc, Matthew Tyndall and his family, cutman Tommy Mc, and his mother Debbie Byrne.
