Boxing legend Frank Bruno has revealed he spent two weeks in hospital after falling seriously ill on a long-haul flight. The 63-year-old former heavyweight champion was treated by medics at Doha airport before being rushed to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a viral infection.
Bruno told The Sun he blacked out on the plane and woke up in hospital with a drip in his arm. 'I did fear the worst because I have never been like that in my life,' he said. He credited his personal assistant, Paul Hunter, with saving his life, adding, 'If Paul hadn't been there, I don't think I would have been sitting here doing this interview with you.'
The incident forced Bruno to cancel a planned trip to Thailand, where he was due to appear at events. 'I felt bad because there's a lot of British people in Thailand who had bought tickets,' he said. Bruno has since been spotted at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium attending the Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn fight.
In a Twitter update, Bruno wrote: 'The last three weeks have been tough especially not knowing what was wrong with me and a Viral infection can mean loads of things... I can't wait to get back to work.' His manager, Dave Davies, confirmed Bruno is recovering and hopes to return to work soon.
