Family Defends Teen Boxer's Decision to Fight After Coma-Inducing Knockout
The family of 19-year-old fighter Isis Sio has strongly defended the boxer's decision to compete in a bout that left her in a medically-induced coma, emphasising she was fully cleared by medical professionals beforehand.
Coma Following First-Round Knockout
Isis Sio was placed in an induced coma after being knocked out in the first round of her fight against Jocelyn Camarillo on Saturday night, March 21. The teenage athlete accepted the fight despite suffering a knockout loss in her previous bout at the end of January.
Sio has since been taken off her ventilator and is now responsive in hospital, with her family hitting out at critics who questioned her decision to return to the ring so soon after her previous defeat.
Family Statement Explains Medical Clearance
In a detailed statement, the family described Sio as a "passionate, disciplined, and well-prepared athlete who carefully evaluates each opportunity placed before her." They insisted her decision to fight Camarillo was "thoughtfully reviewed and analysed prior to acceptance."
The statement addressed criticism about her previous knockout loss to Perla Bazaldua on January 30, clarifying: "The result was not due to a head-strike knockout. Instead, it was caused by a liver shot."
Medical Explanation of Liver Shot Impact
The family provided a medical explanation for the previous knockout, stating: "As is well understood in boxing, a direct blow to the liver can trigger an involuntary physiological response (vasovagal syncope). Because the liver is highly vascularised and rich in nerve supply, such an impact can stimulate the vagus nerve — leading to a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate. This may result in temporary paralysis, dizziness, and difficulty breathing."
They emphasised that Sio had served a 45-day suspension and was medically cleared before accepting the fight with Camarillo.
Current Medical Condition and Care
At present, Isis Sio remains in the intensive care unit but has shown positive signs of recovery. She is off the ventilator and responsive, with her family expressing hope for her continued progression.
The statement revealed she is under the care of three specialised medical divisions who are closely monitoring her condition, with the family awaiting further updates from her medical team.
The family concluded by expressing sincere appreciation for the "continued support, thoughts, and prayers" during this challenging time, while maintaining their defence of Sio's carefully considered decision to return to competitive boxing.
