Former world boxing champion Billy Joe Saunders has denied allegations that he was involved in a mass brawl in Bulkington, Warwickshire, last week. The 32-year-old, who comes from a travelling background, took to social media to dismiss the claims as 'complete rubbish'.
The incident occurred at Poppies, formerly the War Memorial Club, in the early hours of November 28. Three people were taken to hospital, with reports of one man being glassed in the face and another stabbed through the hand. Police arrested a 38-year-old man from Farnborough, Hampshire, in connection with the brawl.
Saunders, a former Olympian and two-weight world champion, said he was aware of a video circulating online that made allegations against him. He stated that his lawyer advised him to make no comment at this stage but that he would be happy to speak to police if contacted.
Warwickshire Police confirmed they are investigating the large-scale disturbance but declined to comment on whether Saunders is a suspect. A spokesman said they could not confirm or deny the identity of any suspects.
Saunders' denial comes after a father of one of the victims accused the boxer of being involved in the trouble on YouTube. The boxer has not been arrested or charged in connection with the incident.
