British boxing stars Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn are not only set to renew their fierce rivalry but are also in line for a monumental financial windfall as they prepare for their highly anticipated rematch this evening.
The Multi-Million Pound Stakes
The total prize fund for the second chapter of their grudge match has reached a staggering £18 million, eclipsing the £15 million pot from their first encounter. This represents the most lucrative payday of both fighters' careers.
For the initial bout, the purse was split evenly, with each man taking home £7.5 million. This time, however, a different arrangement is in place. Various reports confirm a 60/40 split of the official purse, favouring the victor from the first fight. This means Chris Eubank Jr is expected to earn around £10.8 million, while Conor Benn is set to pocket a substantial £8 million.
Benn himself hinted at the enormous sums involved during an interview with Boxing King Media. Dismissing concerns about his opponent's weight cut, Benn retorted, "He is getting paid an absolute fortune. People do that for ten grand, he is getting paid ten million."
Drama, Weight, and a Rolls-Royce
The first fight was not without its controversy, which had a direct impact on Benn's bank balance. Just 24 hours before their April showdown, Eubank Jr failed to make the agreed weight, coming in 0.05lbs over the limit.
This infraction led to a hefty fine of £375,000 for Eubank Jr, a sum that was transferred directly to Benn. The welterweight contender later revealed he used the unexpected windfall to purchase a luxurious Rolls-Royce.
In the build-up to the rematch, Benn couldn't resist a witty jab at his rival's past struggles. "I'm slightly hoping you miss weight again, just a little bit," Benn quipped. "That would be nice. Nice little gift from you last time." He also made a pointed reference to Eubank Jr's claim that he lost a toenail due to severe dehydration before their first bout.
Future Ambitions and Weight Classes
Despite the massive earnings and high-profile nature of this middleweight clash, Conor Benn has confirmed this will be his final fight at the 160-pound limit. He intends to return to his natural welterweight class to pursue his ultimate goal: a world title.
"This is my final fight at 160," Benn stated unequivocally to Sky Sports. "My goal is to win a world title at welterweight." He outlined a plan to attend the WBC convention in Thailand immediately after the fight to solidify his position in the 147-pound division and target big fights against the likes of Ryan Garcia and Rolly Romero.
Benn also predicted that Eubank Jr would retire after this bout, suggesting that fighting a natural welterweight for a large purse makes more financial sense than facing top-tier middleweights for less money.
The stage is set for Saturday, November 15, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London. The ringwalks for the main event are expected at approximately 9:50 PM UK time.
