Chris Eubank Jr has revealed that he keeps his long-term girlfriend out of the public eye because of the painful experience of his parents' highly publicised divorce. The boxer, who announced he is expecting twin boys next year, said he learned from watching his mother and father's split play out in the media.
Speaking before his rematch with Conor Benn, Eubank Jr explained his decision to maintain privacy. 'My private life should be private, that's how I have always seen it,' he said. 'What people don't know and what people don't see, they cannot target, they cannot ruin, they cannot try to interfere with.'
The 35-year-old, whose father Chris Eubank Sr was a boxing legend, grew up in the spotlight on the TV series 'At Home With The Eubanks'. He witnessed his parents' divorce in 2005 and his father's bankruptcy four years later, which shaped his approach to relationships.
'I saw that from very early on, I experienced it with my mother and father. Their split was very public and it was hard to watch and it was embarrassing,' he said. 'Everybody knew that my parents were getting divorced and I knew, from that age, that - whatever relationship I got into - I wasn't going to make it public.'
Eubank Jr, who was outpointed by Benn on Saturday night, recently reunited with his father after years of estrangement. He broke the news of his impending fatherhood to his dad on a BBC documentary, describing it as 'a beautiful moment'. He added: 'It's a massive thing to have him back in my life, especially now, because he is their grandfather and that's a very important relationship.'
