From Troublesome Teenager to Cambridge Scholar
Bouttell's remarkable story began when her parents decided a change of environment was needed during her teenage years. "My parents thought I needed a fresh environment and my mum came up with the idea to send me to China to live with my dad when I was 16," Bouttell revealed. "I was very much on board with it. I was a very outgoing kid and very adventurous so it wasn't like a punishment."
This relocation to Beijing proved transformative, sparking a deep fascination with Chinese language and culture that would shape her academic future. Her proficiency developed to such an extent that she successfully applied to study Chinese Studies at Cambridge University, one of the world's most prestigious academic institutions.
"I completely fell in love with the language and never really left," Bouttell reflected. "I applied to study Chinese Studies at Cambridge, got an interview and was accepted. I can't believe even now that that was the route I ended up taking."
The Unexpected Discovery of Boxing Passion
During her time at Cambridge, Bouttell initially pursued powerlifting between study sessions but made a pivotal switch to boxing to improve her cardiovascular fitness. Thrown directly into sparring during her very first session, she discovered an immediate affinity for the sport, choosing to engage fully rather than retreat.
After graduating, Bouttell returned to China, working as an English teacher while secretly pursuing her boxing passion during lunch breaks. "I was sneaking away at lunchtime to go to boxing classes but I was quite a good teacher so the students let me away with my black eyes!" she recalled with amusement.
Following two years of teaching and an ambitious bicycle trip across China, Bouttell settled in Shanghai where she began freelance translation work while seriously committing to boxing training. "I did a couple of white-collar fights and got completely lost in it," she admitted. "I thought I'd be an idiot if I didn't pursue it."
Professional Ascent and World Title Ambitions
Bouttell's professional boxing journey began in 2023 with a drawn debut, but she quickly established herself with seven consecutive victories that captured attention within the sport. Regarding her ultimate ambitions, Bouttell stated unequivocally: "Becoming world champion is the goal. Whether we get there or not, it's up to fate, but I'll give it my absolute all."
