Donald Trump has declared that a deal with Iran has been 'largely negotiated', with final details currently under discussion. In a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, the US President outlined that the agreement would include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supplies that has been effectively closed by Iran since the onset of hostilities, causing oil prices to surge.
Details of the Proposed Agreement
Trump described the arrangement as a 'Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE' that still requires finalisation by the United States, Iran, and other nations involved in recent talks. He confirmed discussions with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain, as well as a separate call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
However, this is not the first occasion on which a deal has been described as imminent. The announcement raises questions about the Trump administration's earlier decision to engage in military action against Iran, particularly given the global economic strain caused by the Strait's closure and tensions with allies who declined to participate in the conflict.
Nuclear Programme Omitted
Notably, Trump's post made no mention of Iran's nuclear programme or its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which Tehran has indicated it wishes to address at a later stage. A regional official with knowledge of the Pakistan-led mediation efforts confirmed that the potential deal would include a formal declaration ending the war, followed by two months of negotiations on nuclear issues.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, cautioned that 'last-minute disputes' could still derail progress. Under the proposed terms, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened, and the US would lift its blockade of Iranian ports. In return, Iran has signalled a willingness to narrow differences, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.
Iran's Position
Iranian state media quoted Baghaei as describing the draft as a 'framework agreement', adding: 'We want this to include the main issues required for ending the imposed war and other issues of essential importance to us.' He stated that details would be discussed over a period of 30 to 60 days before a final agreement is reached. Baghaei confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz is among the topics under discussion, but stressed that nuclear issues are not part of the current negotiations.
'Our focus at this stage is on ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon,' he said, emphasising that lifting sanctions on Tehran 'has explicitly been included in the text and remains our fixed position.'
Regional Reactions and Risks
Iranian-backed Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV reported that the group's leader, Naim Kassim, received a letter from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi assuring that Tehran would not abandon its allies. A fragile US-brokered ceasefire currently holds in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon, which began two days after the Iran war started.
Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, who led face-to-face talks with the US in Islamabad last month, warned that Iran has rebuilt its military assets and that any resumption of attacks by Trump would result in consequences 'more crushing and more bitter' than at the war's outset. Trump earlier stated he was holding off on a military strike due to 'serious negotiations' and at the request of Middle Eastern allies.
The US and Israel initiated the war with attacks on February 28, cutting short nuclear talks with Iran. Tehran retaliated by effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global oil, natural gas, and fertiliser supplies. The US subsequently blockaded Iranian ports, with Central Command reporting that over 100 commercial vessels had been turned away and four disabled since April 13.
