Eddie Nketia, the 100m sprinter, will make his international debut for Australia at the Commonwealth Games after switching allegiance from Great Britain. The 27-year-old, who was born in London and represented Great Britain at youth level, has been selected for the Australian team for the Games in Birmingham.
Switching Allegiance
Nketia, who moved to Australia in 2019, has been cleared by World Athletics to represent his new country. He will compete in the men's 100m and 4x100m relay. "I'm incredibly proud to represent Australia," Nketia said. "It's been a long process, but I'm excited to pull on the green and gold."
Selection and Competition
Nketia's selection comes after he ran a personal best of 10.12 seconds earlier this year. He will face stiff competition from the likes of Zharnel Hughes and Fred Kerley. Australia's head coach, Craig Hilliard, said: "Eddie has shown great commitment and we believe he can be a strong contender."
The Commonwealth Games will take place from July 28 to August 8. Nketia is one of several athletes who have switched allegiance to Australia in recent years.
