Boxing legend Carl Froch has called for Deontay Wilder to retire from the sport, despite the former heavyweight champion’s comeback victory last week. Wilder knocked out journeyman Tyrrell Herndon, securing his first win since 2022 after back-to-back defeats to Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Froch described the fight as a ‘tune-up’ and suggested Herndon ‘showed up to get beat up.’ He noted that Wilder has lost four of his last six fights and said, ‘It’s all smoke and mirrors now… It would be nice to see him now probably hang his gloves up.’
Despite his retirement call, Froch named potential opponents for Wilder, including Fabio Wardley, Dave Allen, Derek Chisora, and Anthony Joshua. However, Froch also believes Joshua should retire, stating, ‘I think he’s made enough money… AJ should finish.’
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, told Sky Sports that a fight between Joshua and Wilder could happen later this year. Former three-weight world champion Duke McKenzie also backed the clash, saying, ‘If either want to make any type of assault onto the world stage again… this has to be the final eliminator for the pair of them.’
