David Haye's Girlfriend Insists 'Ugly Bird' Remark Was a Compliment
David Haye's girlfriend, Sian Osborne, has publicly defended the former professional boxer's controversial comments about her, insisting that being described as having "the personality of a proper ugly bird" is actually "a big compliment." The 45-year-old I'm A Celebrity: All Stars contestant sparked outrage among viewers and fellow campmates when he made the remark during the ITV show.
Reaction to the Controversial Comments
During the episode, Haye was discussing his partner when he described her as "lovely" but with "the personality of a proper ugly bird." Fellow contestants Scarlett Moffatt and Ashley Roberts expressed shock, with Moffatt exclaiming, "You can't say that, David!" Viewers at home quickly branded the boxer as "misogynistic" and "pathetic" on social media platforms.
However, Osborne has now hit back at the criticism, revealing to The Sun that she was flattered by her boyfriend's unusual phrasing. "I consider it a compliment - a big one," she stated. "I'm fluent in David by now and my family find it hilarious."
Osborne's Interpretation of the Remark
Osborne explained that Haye's comment actually meant she possesses such vibrant character and personality that her physical appearance becomes secondary. "When David tells me I have the personality of an ugly bird — meaning a girl so full of life and character that her looks become irrelevant — he is giving me something the entire modelling industry never once did," she elaborated.
The girlfriend went further to suggest that those offended by the remarks were simply looking for something to be upset about. She also described Haye as "the embodiment of masculinity," claiming that modern women are no longer accustomed to such straightforward communication styles.
Context of the Jungle Conversation
The controversial exchange occurred when Haye was discussing his girlfriend's hosting abilities during jungle camp conversations. "It'd be good to get everyone together as well, after this. [Sian] can cook, for like, 60 people. We have these parties in Costa Rica..." he mentioned before being interrupted by Ashley Roberts asking, "Who is this woman?"
After describing Osborne as "tall, blue eyes..." and receiving Sinitta's comment that "she sounds like she's drop dead gorgeous," Haye delivered his now-infamous line. When pressed for clarification by fellow campmates, he explained his reasoning using what he called "Ugly Duckling Syndrome."
"Most ugly girls realise they've got to have a personality to banter, tell jokes and s**t," Haye elaborated. "People overlook the fact they're not aesthetically amazing straight away. What's it called - Ugly Duckling Syndrome? When girls are ugly when they start off, then get pretty as they get older. But they've still got the personality of when they're ugly."
AI Assistance and Lack of Malice
It was revealed earlier this week that Haye allegedly made the comments without his usual artificial intelligence safety check. According to sources, the boxer typically uses AI technology to review his public statements and social media comments for potential offense before posting.
"His focus inside camp has always been the game, survival decisions and camp dynamics rather than trying to offend anyone," a source explained. "Those who know him best understand there was no malice behind the remark."
The insider added that AI has become "a bit of a comfort blanket" for Haye, but he didn't have access to this tool while in the jungle environment. Daily Mail contacted David Haye's representatives for comment at the time of the original controversy.
