Former heavyweight champion Joe Bugner has launched a scathing attack on actor Russell Crowe, labelling him a 'gutless worm' after a reported fallout during their boxing training sessions. Bugner, who twice went the distance with Muhammad Ali, had been hired to train Crowe for his role as 1930s fighter James J Braddock in the film 'Cinderella Man'.
According to Bugner, the training sessions turned sour when Crowe allegedly failed to show the necessary respect and commitment. 'I told Russell that pro boxing is a very dangerous business,' Bugner said. 'Even in the sparring sessions, when we're all padded up, he'll have to concentrate hard on what's going on or he can get hurt.'
Bugner initially praised Crowe's physical presence, noting that the actor 'made an excellent first impression' and 'looked as if he had plenty of muscle'. However, he now claims that Crowe's attitude was lacking. 'There's more to being a boxing champ than just looking tough,' Bugner added. 'After six weeks in the ring with me, he would have come out knowing a lot more about how to handle himself in a fight.'
The outburst has shocked many in the boxing and film worlds, as Bugner had previously spoken highly of Crowe's potential. The actor has yet to respond to the comments.
