Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister played the full 90 minutes as Argentina beat Algeria 3-0 at the 2026 World Cup, but the midfielder has been given a rough ride by the Argentinian press for his performance.
Messi Steals the Show
Lionel Messi naturally stole the headlines after the 38-year-old scored a stunning hat-trick to give Argentina a comprehensive victory. Mac Allister, however, was accused of a sluggish and lightweight performance.
The 27-year-old struggled for Liverpool this season, casting doubts over his long-term future at Anfield. His contract expires in 2028, and he has been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United, though his father and agent Carlos has dismissed any talk of a move.
Press Ratings
- TyC Sports gave Mac Allister a 5 out of 10, saying: "He looked somewhat awkward and struggled to find his rhythm alongside Enzo at times. He never managed to be dominant."
- Ole was more complimentary, rating him 6 out of 10, noting: "He unleashed a low shot that led to Messi's second goal and combined well in the centre."
- La Nacion also gave a 6, claiming Messi was supported by "a solid second half from Alexis Mac Allister," but added that he had problems with Algerian dribblers in the first half.
Mac Allister's average fan score was 6.57. Despite the criticism, he played the full 90 minutes for the reigning world champions in the Kansas City clash.
