Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital after being involved in a road crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends. The former two-time heavyweight champion was a passenger in a black SUV when it collided with a stationary lorry on a main road near Lagos, according to local authorities.
The 36-year-old boxer sustained minor injuries in the collision, which killed Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home on Wednesday to pay their respects before the bodies are repatriated to the UK. A statement shared on social media confirmed his discharge, noting he was "deemed clinically fit to recuperate from home" but was "heavy-hearted and full of emotions" over the loss.
The lorry involved in the crash has been located and is being held at a car pound in Sagamu. Police confirmed the vehicle was illegally parked at the time of the incident. "He was parked on the side of the highway which is illegal; he had not broken down and he was not with the vehicle when the accident happened," a police officer said. The driver remains at large, with a manhunt ongoing.
Joshua's own driver has also been discharged from hospital and is giving a statement to police. There are suggestions he may face charges for reckless driving. Joshua had been holidaying in Nigeria following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on 19 December.
