Anthony Joshua Car Crash: Two Friends Killed, Boxer Injured in Nigeria
Anthony Joshua injured, two friends killed in car crash

British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been involved in a serious road accident in Nigeria, resulting in the tragic deaths of two of his close friends and confidants.

The Fatal Incident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The collision occurred on Monday on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Joshua was travelling in a black Lexus SUV which, while attempting an overtaking manoeuvre, crashed into a stationary wagon. The impact was severe, leading to immediate fatalities.

The two men who lost their lives were later identified as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, both described as integral members of 'Team Joshua' and long-time friends of the boxer. Joshua himself was transported to a local hospital with what have been reported as minor injuries.

Health Update and Tributes Pour In

By Tuesday, sources close to the 2012 Olympic gold medallist indicated he was in considerable discomfort, feeling pain 'everywhere' following the crash. His family have since spoken out, with two of his uncles providing statements to reassure the public about his condition in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The boxing world and beyond have rallied in support. Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter at Matchroom Boxing, shared a heartfelt social media tribute to Ghami and Ayodele on Wednesday. Fellow fighters including Oleksandr Usyk, Jake Paul, and Chris Eubank Jr also posted messages of condolence online.

Investigation and Future Fight Implications

Local reports suggest the driver involved in the crash could face prosecution for alleged reckless driving, as investigations into the exact circumstances continue.

The incident has also cast doubt on the future of Joshua's highly anticipated career plans. Promoter Frank Warren has stated that a potential blockbuster fight between Joshua and Tyson Fury may now be delayed, suggesting it might not happen until late 2026, if at all. Warren emphasised that "boxing will certainly be the last thing on his [Joshua's] mind, right now."

The boxing community now waits for further updates on Joshua's recovery, while mourning the profound loss of two key figures in his inner circle.
