Sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson, the reigning 100m world champion, was arrested last Sunday on a domestic violence charge at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The arrest followed an alleged assault on her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman.
According to a police report, a Transportation Security Administration supervisor alerted an officer to a disturbance between Richardson and Coleman. CCTV footage showed Richardson grabbing Coleman's backpack and yanking it away, then blocking his path and shoving him into a wall. She also appeared to throw an item, possibly headphones, at him.
The 25-year-old was booked into the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, at 6.54pm on Sunday and released at 1.13pm on Monday. Coleman declined to participate in the investigation, stating he did not wish to be a victim.
Richardson competed in the women's 100m at the US track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon, on Thursday. She has an automatic bye to the world championships in Tokyo in September as the defending champion. USA Track and Field declined to comment on the matter.
Richardson won 100m gold at the 2023 world championships and silver at the Paris Olympics last summer, also helping the 4x100 relay team to Olympic gold. She missed the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after a positive marijuana test at the US trials.
