A 36-year-old man from south-east England has died after collapsing during the London Marathon on Sunday, organisers have confirmed. The runner, who has not been named, collapsed between mile 23 and mile 24 of the 26.2-mile race.
London Marathon Events said the man received immediate medical treatment, with an ambulance arriving within three minutes, but he later died in hospital. In a statement, organisers expressed sincere condolences to his family and friends, adding that the family has requested privacy and no further details will be released. The cause of death will be determined through a medical examination.
More than 40,000 participants took part in the event, which started in Greenwich and finished at The Mall. By 5pm, 38,156 people had crossed the new digital finish gantry, while thousands more completed the marathon virtually within a 24-hour window.
In the elite races, Kenya's Amos Kipruto won the men's event in 2hr 4min 39sec. Ethiopia's Yalemzerf Yehualaw recovered from a stumble on a speed bump with six miles remaining to win the women's race in 2hr 17min 25sec, the third fastest time in the event's history.
