Naomi Osaka's US Open campaign ended in the Round of 16 with a straight-sets defeat to Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina. The Ukrainian advanced to the last eight in just over an hour, dispatching the two-time US Open winner without dropping a set.
However, Osaka's approach to the court at Louis Armstrong Stadium drew as much attention as her performance. The 28-year-old wore an oversized hooded coat lined with thick faux-fur and a flamboyant skirt, a trademark fashion statement that did not sit well with some viewers.
One fan wrote: "Osaka comes out in a ridiculous coat and gets absolutely smoked in 1st set. Maybe leave the ludicrous bling in the locker room."
Potapova's Injury Heartbreak
Anastasia Potapova was reduced to tears after suffering a leg injury during her match against 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva. The 25-year-old collapsed clutching her right leg while returning a forehand in the deciding set.
Andreeva rushed to assist her opponent, helping the trainer apply ice during the medical timeout. Potapova returned to court and fought on, but ultimately bowed out after two hours and 26 minutes of play.
The Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd rose to its feet to applaud Potapova's efforts. Andreeva now faces Coco Gauff in Wednesday's quarter-final.
