LIV Golf Issues Furious Statement Over 'Unprecedented' OWGR Decision
The Saudi-backed LIV Golf league has slammed what it calls an "unprecedented" decision by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) to award world ranking points only to top-10 finishers in its events, despite the league's significant format changes. This fresh blow caps off what has been a challenging off-season for the breakaway tour, which has already seen the departure of several high-profile players.
Format Changes Fail to Secure Full Recognition
LIV Golf had been campaigning for full OWGR recognition ahead of its new 14-event season, which begins in Riyadh. The league has implemented several changes aimed at meeting eligibility standards, including switching from 54-hole to 72-hole tournaments, increasing field sizes to 57 players, and introducing more promotion and relegation to create a less closed competition structure.
Despite these adjustments, the OWGR Governing Board has classified LIV Golf events as 'Small Field Tournaments', meaning only the top 10 finishers in individual stroke play events will receive ranking points. The board cited that the league "does not currently meet all eligibility standards" as the reason for this restriction.
LIV's Strongly Worded Response
In a strongly worded statement, LIV Golf expressed its disappointment with the decision: "This outcome is unprecedented. Under these rules, a player finishing 11th in a LIV Golf event is treated the same as a player finishing 57th."
The statement continued: "Limiting points to only the top 10 finishers disproportionately harms players who consistently perform at a high level but finish just outside that threshold, as well as emerging talent working to establish themselves on the world stage—precisely the players a fair and meritocratic ranking system is designed to recognize."
LIV Golf emphasized that no other competitive tour or league in OWGR history has faced such restrictions and expressed hope that this might be a first step toward more equitable treatment. The league stated it entered the process "in good faith" and will continue advocating for a ranking system that "reflects performance over affiliation."
Ranking Slide and Major Qualification Concerns
The lack of full ranking points has already had significant consequences for LIV Golf players, many of whom have seen their world rankings plummet since joining the league in 2022. This slide has directly impacted their ability to qualify for major championships through traditional ranking pathways.
Currently, Tyrrell Hatton is the highest-ranked LIV player at world No. 22, largely thanks to points earned on the DP World Tour before his move. In contrast, his Legion XIII captain and former world No. 1 Jon Rahm has fallen to No. 97 in the rankings.
OWGR's Justification and Broader Challenges
OWGR chairman and former Masters champion Trevor Immelman defended the decision, stating: "We fully recognized the need to rank the top men's players in the world but at the same time had to find a way of doing so that was equitable to the thousands of other players competing on other tours that operate with established meritocratic pathways."
Beyond ranking points, LIV Golf faces additional challenges as it enters its new season:
- Bryson DeChambeau is entering the final year of his contract and could demand substantial re-signing fees
- The league's new signings—Victor Perez, Thomas Detry, Elvis Smylie, and Laurie Canter—lack the star power of previous acquisitions
- Questions remain about the Saudi Public Investment Fund's continued investment in a venture that has reportedly cost approximately $5 billion without significant returns
- No permanent peace deal with the PGA Tour appears imminent
Looking Ahead to the New Season
The LIV Golf season opener in Riyadh will feature a shotgun start at 6:15 PM local time, marking the beginning of a global tour spanning 10 countries across five continents. Teams have undergone rebranding, with Iron Heads GC now known as Korean Golf Club under captain Byeong Hun An. In the UK, all events will be broadcast live on TNT Sports.
Despite the OWGR setback, LIV Golf remains committed to establishing itself as a legitimate force in professional golf while continuing to advocate for what it views as a fairer ranking system that properly recognizes player performance regardless of tour affiliation.
