Kenya's Benson Kipruto won the New York City Marathon men's elite race in a thrilling photo finish, edging compatriot Alexander Mutiso by two hundredths of a second. Kipruto finished with a time of two hours, eight minutes and nine seconds, adding the New York title to previous major victories in Boston, Chicago and Tokyo.
In the women's race, Hellen Obiri shattered the 22-year course record, finishing in 2:19:51 to win for the second time. She broke Margaret Okayo's 2003 record of 2:22:31, with Sharon Lokedi and Sheila Chepkirui also finishing inside the previous mark. Obiri earned a $50,000 bonus for the record.
Eliud Kipchoge, the former world record holder and two-time Olympic champion, finished 17th on his New York debut. The 40-year-old completed his six-star set of Major Marathon finishes in what may be his final competitive marathon.
Albert Korir completed a Kenyan top three in the men's race, while Great Britain's Patrick Dever finished fourth on his New York debut with a time of 2:08:58. In the elite wheelchair races, Marcel Hug and Susannah Scaroni successfully defended their titles.
