Jordan Henderson has opened up about the horror arm injury he sustained while celebrating England’s World Cup win over Mexico. The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder was stretchered off after a freak accident following the 3-2 victory in the Estadio Azteca.
Injury Details and Surgery
Henderson suffered a fractured left forearm when he lost his balance while climbing back over the advertising hoardings after celebrating with fans. He was taken to hospital in Kansas City, where he underwent surgery. Posting on social media, Henderson said: “Surgery done! Now Let's get ready for the big one Saturday. Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas city orthopaedic institute. Especially the 3 surgeons who carried out the operation. Dr. Kenneth P. Unruh, Dr. Mark J Winston, Dr. Kirk McCullough.”
Match Recap and Incident
England secured their quarter-final spot with a 3-2 win over Mexico, thanks to a Jude Bellingham brace and a Harry Kane penalty. Despite being reduced to 10 men, England defended fiercely. After full-time, players climbed over advertising hoardings to sing “Wonderwall” with travelling supporters. Henderson, however, fell awkwardly while trying to return to the pitch.
Father's Account
Henderson’s father, Brian, was in the stands and initially unaware of the severity. He told the Daily Mail: “It’s his left forearm – he’s just completely smashed it. He’s going to have a cast on and then it depends on what the experts say.” He added: “At first, I just thought he’d fallen. I thought he’d maybe scraped his wrist. I had no idea it was that serious until they were interviewing Harry Kane and a trolley came past with Jordan on it. I could see him on there with oxygen.”
Support from Teammates
England teammates including Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Elliot Anderson, and Morgan Rogers showed support with heart emojis in the comments of Henderson’s post. Despite the injury, Henderson remains with the squad, vowing to stay until the tournament ends.
