Gout Gout Triumphs in Under-20 100m at Australian Junior Championships

Teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout has claimed a stylish victory in the under-20 100m event at the 2026 Australian Athletics Junior Championships in Brisbane. The 18-year-old crossed the finish line in a time of 10.21 seconds, securing his second consecutive national junior title in this discipline.

Race Details and Performance

Competing on Saturday, Gout Gout did not have the fastest start but quickly settled into his stride, chasing down early leaders to win with a legal tailwind of +0.5 meters per second. He eased up before the finish, waving to the crowd, and finished ahead of Zavier Peacock, who clocked 10.35 seconds, and Uwezo Lubenda, who came third in 10.37 seconds.

Gout commented after the race: "I didn't have the best start, but I came out for the win and wanted to put on a show for the people watching. The more of a show there is, the more pressure, and the faster you run. At the end of the day, I'm going out there to have fun and run as fast as I can."

Future Plans and Rivalries

Gout Gout will soon embark on his first senior athletics campaign overseas. This includes a highly anticipated showdown with 200m Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo at a Diamond League meet in Oslo in June. Prior to that, he will train in America alongside sponsor stablemate Noah Lyles, the reigning 100m Olympic champion and four-time 200m world champion.

The pair are scheduled to compete in a 150m duel at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in Czechia on June 16. Gout expressed excitement about facing top competitors, stating it motivates him to elevate his game.

Historical Context and Records

Despite his victory, Gout Gout fell short of breaking the 10-second barrier, a milestone recently achieved by rival Lachlan Kennedy, who ran 9.96 seconds at the national championships. Gout chose not to target this record during the junior final, easing up 30 meters from the line.

He has a personal best of 10.00 seconds set in February and previously ran 9.99 seconds with an excessive tailwind last year. Both Gout and Kennedy are aiming to surpass the national record of 9.93 seconds held by Patrick Johnson since 2003.

Recent Form and Upcoming Events

Gout arrived at the junior championships in excellent form, having won the 200m at last week's nationals with a legal time of 19.67 seconds. This is the fastest official under-20 time on record, surpassing Usain Bolt's 19.93 seconds set in 2004.

He will skip the Commonwealth Games this year to focus on the 200m at the World Junior Championships in Oregon in August. A decision on whether to add the 100m to his program at the junior championships will be made in the coming months.
