The European Athletics Championships in Birmingham will showcase not only established stars like Keely Hodgkinson and Zharnel Hughes but also a new generation of British talent. The event, held at the Alexander Stadium, is expected to draw packed crowds eager to witness the sport's future.
Five Emerging Talents to Watch
Emily Newnham (400m hurdles and 400m) – The 22-year-old from Shaftesbury Barnet has improved her personal bests in both the hurdles and the flat this year. She won two gold medals at the European U23 Championships in Bergen, setting a championship record in the 400m hurdles. With Dutch star Femke Broeders-Bol moving up to the 800m, Newnham could be a medal contender, as her best of 53.92 would have earned silver two years ago.
Success Eduan (200m) – The 21-year-old won a European U20 medal at 17 and took the European U23 title last year. She also helped Britain win the 4x100m at the World Relays in 2025. At the UK Championships in Birmingham, she beat a World Championship silver medallist to claim the national title by more than two tenths of a second.
Kimani Jack (high jump) – A history graduate from the University of Birmingham, Jack cleared 2.30m for the first time this year, with a personal best of 2.31m. He followed up with second place on his Diamond League debut in Monaco, clearing 2.30m again.
Charlotte Henrich (400m) – At just 19, Henrich has set two Welsh national records over 400m, breaking a mark that stood for 44 years. She ran 50.58 to finish third at the UK Championships and then lowered that to 50.45 at the Diamond League in London.
Innes FitzGerald (5000m) – The 20-year-old made her World Championship debut in Tokyo last September. She has six European U20s cross-country titles and won 3000m and 5000m gold at the European U20 Championships last summer, breaking a 32-year-old championship record.
