Bruno Fernandes has voiced his frustration after Portugal's World Cup exit, describing himself as "sad, frustrated, and disappointed" following the team's last-16 defeat to Spain. The Manchester United midfielder took to social media to underline that the tournament represented a missed opportunity for a squad brimming with talent.
Portugal's World Cup campaign ends in heartbreak
Portugal saw their World Cup hopes dashed earlier this week when Spain scored a stoppage-time winner to advance from their last-16 clash. The defeat brought an end to Cristiano Ronaldo's aspirations of ever winning a World Cup, and it also highlighted the underwhelming recent tournament record of a Portuguese side considered a golden generation.
Fernandes headed into the tournament after being named the Premier League's best player. He was joined by a host of stellar individuals, including Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League winners Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Joao Neves, as well as Manchester City's Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva. Despite this wealth of talent, the team failed to deliver.
Fernandes' social media message
In a post on social media, Fernandes wrote: "This group of players raised my expectations high, not only because of their quality, but also because of the incredible team we've built over the years. Thank you to all the players, the coaching staff, and everyone who supported us and helped us every day during the World Cup. To all the Portuguese people, a big thank you for your support and belief."
The midfielder's comments come after he refused to take any positives from Portugal's campaign, in which they won just two of their five games. While Ronaldo claimed he left with his head held high and outgoing boss Roberto Martinez declined to label the loss a failure, Fernandes struck a different tone.
Fernandes: 'It was a missed opportunity'
Fernandes said: "There's no point in talking about it now because we're out of the World Cup, but it was a missed opportunity. Every opportunity is a missed one because when we reach a World Cup, everyone wants to win. We're no different - it's been the same in every World Cup Portugal has participated in - but it was a missed opportunity."
He added: "Obviously, we were eliminated by a great team - we lost to one of the favourites to win the World Cup, just as we were ourselves. The overall assessment can't be positive - it would only be if we'd made it to the end, and we didn't."
Portugal's golden generation, which includes multiple Champions League winners and Premier League stars, has now failed to progress beyond the last 16 in two consecutive World Cups, raising questions about the team's ability to gel on the biggest stage.
