Breanna Scott and Jesse Moore have added to Australia’s gold medal haul at the Commonwealth Games, winning individual apparatus titles on balance beam and parallel bars at Glasgow International Arena.
Scott dominates balance beam
Scott scored 13.933 points to take the balance beam title, ahead of Singapore’s Amanda Yap (13.233) and Canada’s Lia-Monica Fontaine (13.000). The victory gave Scott her second gold of the Games, following her contribution to Australia’s dominant team all-around win. It was her first individual gold medal, having also claimed silver in the women’s individual all-around.
“[Balance beam] is definitely my favourite when it’s going well,” Scott said. “It’s kind of crazy, to be honest. It definitely hasn’t sunk in yet. The last three days have just been absolutely wild. The team gold was such a special medal for all of us, and that was really the main goal coming into this. All of us in finals, now getting these extra little medals is just topping it off.”
Moore earns redemption on parallel bars
Moore scored 14.000 points to win the parallel bars title, finishing ahead of Cyprus’s Marios Georgiou (13.800) and Canada’s Félix Dolci (13.300). The 23-year-old, Australia’s leading men’s gymnast heading into the Games, secured three medals overall, adding to his team bronze and individual all-around bronze. He had missed the podium in the rings and pommel horse events.
Australia’s consistent medal run
Scott’s beam title meant Australia medalled on every day of the five-day gymnastics competition, with the nation sitting second behind Canada ahead of the final apparatus events. McDonald and Georgia Godwin were set to contest the floor exercise final. In the men’s competition, James Hardy finished fifth on vault after winning floor and rings bronze the previous day. Ritam Malik was due to compete in the horizontal bar final to wrap up Australia’s gymnastics campaign.
