Adam Gemili Announces Retirement from Athletics After 15-Year Career

British sprinter Adam Gemili, now aged 32, has officially called time on his illustrious athletics career, marking the end of 15 years on the track. The announcement comes as he looks forward to embracing new opportunities and chapters in his life beyond competitive running.

The One Race Gemili Will Watch Back

In a reflective moment, Gemili revealed that while he typically avoids revisiting his old races, there is one standout performance he intends to watch again. "I don't like to watch old races but that one I might have to go back and see," he admitted with a smile. This race is none other than the historic night in east London when Great Britain stormed to a world gold in the 4x100m relay.

Originally billed as Usain Bolt's farewell event, the 2017 World Championships in London saw Gemili, alongside teammates CJ Ujah, Danny Talbot, and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, steal the show on home soil. "It was Usain's last race, it was so stacked. We were just so confident," Gemili recalled. "We knew we had drilled so hard, we backed each other and backed ourselves leg for leg."

He described the intense competition, noting he faced Justin Gatlin, the 100m winner, on the bend. "Cool, catch me if you can," he quipped. The victory proved to be the crowning moment of his career, a memory he cherishes deeply. "There were times that night I was hugging the boys and never wanted to let go. If I could live a night again, it would be that night," he shared.

A Career Filled with Achievements and No Regrets

Gemili's career spanned three Olympic Games, starting with his breakthrough at London 2012. He came agonizingly close to an Olympic medal at Rio 2016 and was crowned European champion. His final race took place at the London Diamond League last summer, fittingly at the Olympic Stadium, the venue that both launched and crowned his career.

"I've known for a while," Gemili reflected on his retirement. "I am really happy, I am really content. I am really pleased I have done it on my own terms. I could have gone for another season but what am I trying to prove?" He expressed pride in his longevity at the top level, highlighting that many athletes are lucky to experience one Olympic cycle, while he managed three.

Gemili emphasized that he has no regrets, stating, "I have given my all now and I am ready for the next chapter in my life. Life can now really move forward and I am so excited for that."

Looking Ahead: New Ventures and Staying Involved in Athletics

Since stepping back from competition, Gemili has enjoyed more time with family and friends, while also honing his skills in sports like padel and golf. However, he has no intention of leaving athletics behind entirely. He has returned to Chelsea, the club where he trained as a child, to help young players improve their sprinting techniques and is set to launch his own sprinting academy.

Additionally, Gemili plans to explore opportunities in media to promote the sport, building on his commentary work at the Paris 2024 Olympics. "Wherever the opportunity takes me I am going to explore as much as possible," he added. "I have a lot of knowledge I have learned from the best in the world and I am excited to share what I know with the next generation."

He expressed enthusiasm for roles in punditry or commentary, saying, "If I can do anything to help promote it, anything I can do to stay involved I am going to take it because I absolutely love it. I love talking about the sport and I can give a really fresh, different perspective."

As Gemili transitions into this new phase, his legacy as a dedicated and accomplished sprinter remains firmly intact, with fans and the athletics community celebrating his contributions to the sport.
