Three teenage workers at a diner near West Mersea beach in Essex dashed onto the sand after spotting people in difficulty in the water on Wednesday, July 22. Police confirmed that a woman in her 40s and a teenage girl lost their lives, while a third person remains in hospital with serious injuries.
Incident at Seaview Avenue
The West Mersea Coastguard Rescue Team responded to an incident near Seaview Avenue in West Mersea, Colchester, on Wednesday evening. The teenagers, all employed at the Seaview Beach Cafe, were among the first to arrive after hearing a disturbance. According to the Mirror, the family encountered difficulty in a 'rip tide'.
Emergency response
Police and ambulance staff attended, and the RNLI launched its West Mersea and Clacton lifeboats. A police spokesperson said: "We were called by the ambulance service at 5.35pm on Wednesday 22 July after reports that several people had got into difficulty in the water near Seaview Avenue. Despite the efforts of the emergency services, we can sadly confirm that a teenage girl and a woman in her 40s have died. A third person remains in hospital in a serious condition. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those affected at this very difficult time."
