Sir Keir Starmer's Cabinet Reshuffle: Angela Rayner Appointed Housing Secretary in Major Shake-Up
Starmer Reshuffle: Rayner Appointed Housing Secretary

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has executed his first significant cabinet reshuffle since taking office, in a strategic move to strengthen his government's delivery of key manifesto commitments. The most notable appointment sees Deputy Leader Angela Rayner take on the crucial role of Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The reshuffle, announced on Monday, positions several trusted allies into pivotal roles. Pat McFadden, who played a central role in Labour's election campaign, has been elevated to Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, a key coordinating position in the Cabinet Office.

Key Appointments and Strategic Shifts

Ms. Rayner's new portfolio hands her direct responsibility for tackling the UK's acute housing crisis—a cornerstone of Labour's election promises. She will lead the charge on building 1.5 million new homes over the next parliament and reforming the private rental sector.

Meanwhile, Liz Kendall assumes the expanded role of Secretary of State for Work and Welfare, and Jonathan Reynolds continues as Business Secretary, signalling stability for the business community.

A Government "Getting On With the Job"

Downing Street characterised the changes as essential for a government focused on immediate action. A spokesperson stated the reshuffle is about "ensuring the right team is in place to deliver on the priorities of the British people... and to get on with the job from day one."

This realignment underscores Sir Keir's determination to translate campaign rhetoric into tangible results, particularly on domestic issues like housing and economic growth. The promotion of proven election winners like McFadden highlights a focus on disciplined governance and effective implementation.
