Sir Keir Starmer's biographer, Tom Baldwin, has issued a stark warning to the Labour Party, cautioning against ousting the current leader. He suggests that such a move could trigger a destabilising cycle of leadership changes before the next general election.
Internal conflict after local elections
Baldwin expressed astonishment at the party's internal conflict following disastrous local election results. He compared Labour's behaviour to the Conservatives' past 'bad habit' of frequently changing leaders. Baldwin emphasised that replacing Sir Keir now could mean the party would need to elect yet another leader and Prime Minister before the next election to effectively challenge Nigel Farage and Reform UK.
Calls for resignation
Baldwin criticised those pushing for Sir Keir's removal, including allies of Health Secretary Wes Streeting who are reportedly planning his resignation to initiate a leadership challenge. Despite resignations from four ministers and calls from over 90 MPs for him to step down, Sir Keir has so far managed to retain his leadership. However, a full-blown contest remains a possibility.
