Devon and Cornwall Police have arrested a 26-year-old white British man on suspicion of murdering former MP and prisons minister Ann Widdecombe. The suspect was taken into custody at an address in Newton Abbot on Friday, a day after Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor.
Details of the Incident
Widdecombe, 78, was discovered with serious injuries at her property on Thursday. She served as a Conservative MP from 1987 to 2010 and held the role of prisons minister under John Major. After leaving the Commons, she became a Brexit Party MEP and later a Reform UK spokeswoman. She also gained fame as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.
Police Statement
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman of Devon and Cornwall Police said the case is "not being treated as terrorism" and there is "no information" at this time to suggest it was a "politically motivated crime." The investigation is ongoing.
