Labour Must Show Stronger Support for Families, Says Lucy Powell
Labour Must Show Stronger Support for Families

Lucy Powell, Labour Deputy Leader, has called on her party to more strongly demonstrate its commitment to ordinary people and their families. In an article for British Brief, Powell wrote that while Labour has been quietly taking on vested interests, it must now show more clearly that it stands with working families, particularly during difficult times.

Windfall Tax and Economic Inequality

Powell highlighted BP's profits more than doubling due to the Iran war, arguing it justifies Labour's windfall energy tax. She noted that during economic crises, some profit while others pay the price, referencing the 2008 financial crisis, the Covid pandemic, and the current energy price shock. Labour, she said, is focused on rewiring the economy to work for everyone.

Government Actions and Future Plans

The Deputy Leader praised Keir Starmer for keeping the UK out of the Iran conflict but acknowledged the need to address its consequences. She pointed to the establishment of GB Energy and the push for clean, homegrown power as essential for future protection. Additionally, she highlighted the recent pay rise for the lowest paid and the Renters' Rights Act, which stabilises rents and ends bidding wars.

Criticism of Reform and Tories

Powell criticised Nigel Farage and Reform UK, accusing them of opposing the windfall tax and supporting an insurance-based NHS. She also condemned the Tories and Reform for wanting the UK to follow Trump into the war. The Greens, she said, showed their true colours by criticising police over the Golders Green attacker's apprehension.

Birmingham Bin Strikes Resolved

Powell welcomed the end of Birmingham bin strikes, praising Labour council leader John Cotton and Unite the Union's Sharon Graham for reaching a deal. She described the resolution as in the interests of the city, its workers, and residents.

Support for Exam Students

With her daughter facing 26 GCSE exams, Powell wished luck to all students taking exams, noting that GCSEs are tougher than in her day.

Football Banter

Powell joked about the Premier League title race between her Manchester City and Keir Starmer's Arsenal, expressing hope that Arsenal would 'bottle it' again.
