Labour is heading for a crushing defeat in Wales after suffering disastrous local election results in England overnight. The party has been the largest in Wales for over a century and had dominated the Welsh Parliament since its creation. However, after Wales went to the polls on Thursday, Labour is bracing for a brutal outcome in its former heartlands.
Labour's Vote Collapses in Heartlands
A Labour source indicated the party's vote had collapsed in Blaenau Gwent Caerffili Rhymni, describing it as a 'struggle' to hold on to one seat out of six in the constituency. Sir Keir Starmer has already taken responsibility for a 'tough' set of local election results in England, where hundreds of Labour councillors were voted out.
First Minister at Risk
Baroness Eluned Morgan, the First Minister and leader of Welsh Labour, has previously acknowledged she is at risk of losing her seat in Ceredigion Penfro. Huw Irranca-Davies, Welsh Labour campaign chairman, said: 'After many years in government in Wales, there was always going to be a strong mood for change. The ongoing pressures from the cost of living are real and hurt deeply.' He added that Labour would 'reflect carefully and listen with humility.'
Plaid Cymru and Reform Lead Polls
Plaid Cymru and Reform UK have topped opinion polls throughout the campaign. A Plaid Cymru source said: 'From what we have so far... It's looking good,' adding that the Labour vote had 'collapsed.'
