Senior figures within the Church of England have issued a furious denouncement of far-right activist Tommy Robinson, following his unauthorised use of Peterborough Cathedral as a backdrop for a political campaign video.
The controversial figure, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, filmed content inside the historic place of worship, a move the church has labelled a 'sacrilegious act' and a blatant 'exploitation of the cathedral for political purposes'.
A Violation of Sacred Space
The Most Rev Stephen Cottrell, the Archbishop of York, led the condemnation. He stated that Robinson's actions were a profound violation of the cathedral's sanctity, a site dedicated to worship and community cohesion, not political division.
'Our churches and cathedrals are sacred spaces, open to all for prayer, reflection, and worship. They are not arenas for political point-scoring or the promotion of ideologies that often seek to sow hatred and division,' a spokesperson for the Archbishop said.
Cathedral Authorities 'Appalled'
Officials at Peterborough Cathedral expressed they were 'appalled' upon discovering the video. They confirmed that Robinson had entered as a general visitor and had not sought permission for filming, which is a standard requirement.
A statement clarified that the cathedral 'does not endorse any political party or candidate' and that the video was filmed without consent. They emphasised their commitment to being a 'welcome place for all', a principle they believe Robinson's actions directly undermined.
