Former Wales international Alix Popham is set to cycle from Cardiff to Edinburgh this month to raise awareness and funds for brain health in sport. The 43-year-old, diagnosed with early onset dementia and probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from his rugby career, will ride 450 miles for the charity Head for Change.
The challenge departs from Principality Stadium on February 6, two days after Wales' Six Nations opener against Ireland. Popham and fellow riders aim to arrive in Edinburgh by the time Wales face Scotland on February 11.
Head for Change supports former football and rugby players affected by neurodegenerative diseases linked to their careers. The charity provides care, funds research, and advocates for safer sports through a player-centred approach.
Popham said: 'Although 450 miles is a huge distance to cover, the true support shown by so many people is a great motivator to keep cycling.' He added that the charity aims to help those 'hit hard or struggling with neurological diseases.'
Pupils at Langstone Primary School near Newport, including Popham's daughter Darcey, will also cycle the same distance on static bikes to support the cause.
