Wayne Rooney suffered an injury to his hand during the recording of a segment for his BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, which may necessitate surgical intervention. The former England captain was participating in a training exercise with ex-Everton teammate Jordan Pickford when the incident occurred.
Details of the Incident
Rooney, who interviewed Pickford for the show broadcast before Saturday's FA Cup final, engaged in goalkeeping drills at Everton's training facility. While attempting to save a penalty taken by Pickford, Rooney injured his left hand. He later revealed that he had consulted a surgeon regarding treatment and was scheduled for a further consultation to determine if surgery on his wrist is required.
Rooney's Comments
Appearing on BBC coverage with a wrist brace, Rooney stated: "I went in goal and then it was a great save off Jordan and then I've messed my hand up. I'm with a surgeon. I've been in the hospital and I'm back on Monday." He added humorously: "Look at that for a save! I saved that and hurt my hand. I'm seeing a surgeon on Monday to see if I need surgery. By the way, just for the newspapers out there, I haven't got my wedding ring on because my fingers have swollen up - I know they will make a big thing! It's hurt but it'll be fine."
Background on Rooney and Pickford
Rooney rejoined Everton shortly after Pickford moved there from Sunderland in 2017. The pair had previously met on England duty. Pickford recalled: "I watched you growing up and when I was watching you in the Euros and getting in an England squad, everyone looked up to you. So even then [on the bus] I was texting saying: 'I'm opposite Wazza.' I was shaking. I was on the bench and it was a great experience. My dream was to play for England. We know there's only that small percentage of kids growing up get that opportunity."
