Football Focus, the long-running BBC football programme, is set to be axed after more than 50 years on air. The broadcaster cited "changing audience behaviours" as the reason for the decision. The show, which has been a staple of Saturday afternoon television, will conclude as part of a broader shift in how the BBC delivers sports content.
Walker and Scott's Public Disagreement
The show's recent history includes a public spat between two of its former presenters, Dan Walker and Alex Scott. Walker, who hosted the programme for over a decade before stepping down in 2021, expressed his dismay at reports of declining viewership in 2023. "It's hard to see Football Focus struggling," he said. "I loved it growing up and it was an honour to present it. We poured everything into that show each week and worked hard to keep it relevant. I hope it stays part of the TV landscape."
Scott responded with a gif, prompting Walker to clarify his remarks and wish her well. Not one to back down, Scott then highlighted upcoming interviews with Ange Postecoglou and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard on the "Award" winning Football Focus, adding, "Make that a headline."
Scott's Future at BBC
The BBC confirmed that Scott will remain a key figure in their sports coverage. "Football Focus is currently fronted by the brilliant Alex Scott, who will remain at the heart of BBC Sport's football coverage and biggest sporting moments," the statement read. "Alex will play a key role across this year's FIFA World Cup, the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup and BBC Sport's ongoing coverage of the Women's Super League. She will also once again serve as one of this year's hosts of the BBC Sport Personality of the Year Awards, with more new and exciting projects with Alex due to be announced in the coming months."
Director of BBC Sport Alex Kay-Jelski praised Scott as "one of our finest presenters" and teased a "very exciting" project with her. He also outlined the decision to end Football Focus, stating, "This decision was made before last week's wider BBC savings announcement, reflecting the continued shift in how audiences engage with football and our commitment to evolving how we deliver content to reach fans wherever they are."
The end of Football Focus marks the conclusion of an era for BBC Sport, but the network promises to continue delivering football content through other platforms and programmes.
