Nicola Sturgeon has broken her silence after her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, admitted to embezzling more than £400,000 from the Scottish National Party (SNP). The former Scottish first minister described the past week as “probably the worst” of her life, stating she felt “deceived”, “misled”, and “betrayed” by her ex-husband.
Details of the Embezzlement
Murrell, who served as the SNP’s chief executive, pleaded guilty to embezzling funds between 2010 and 2022. He was remanded in custody after admitting to spending the money on luxury items, including a motorhome, cars, expensive watches, and a telescope. The court heard that Murrell used his position to divert party funds for personal gain.
Sturgeon’s Reaction
In a statement, Sturgeon said she was unaware of the embezzlement and learned about it from newspaper reports. She questioned how she could have known given her demanding role as first minister and their combined household income. “I am not OK,” she admitted, adding that she will need time to process the betrayal, which she described as a “painful truth”.
Sturgeon and Murrell separated last year, and their relationship has been strained since the allegations emerged. The former first minister emphasized that she had no involvement in or knowledge of the financial crimes committed by her ex-husband.
