Southampton have been kicked out of the Championship play-off final following the rejection of their appeal against the English Football League's disciplinary action over a spying scandal. The decision means Middlesbrough, whom Southampton defeated in the semi-finals, will now take their place in the final against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday, May 23, with kick-off scheduled for 3.30pm.
Spying scandal details
Southampton were found guilty of breaching Football League regulations after admitting to filming training sessions of opposing Championship sides, including Oxford United, Ipswich Town, and Middlesbrough. As a result, the club will also face a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 season.
Appeal rejected
Southampton had argued that the punishment was "manifestly disproportionate," but their appeal was ultimately rejected. The analyst involved, Tonda Eckert, may still face further misconduct charges from the Football Association.
The EFL's decision has been met with mixed reactions, with Middlesbrough now set to contest the play-off final against Hull City. The game promises to be a high-stakes encounter as both teams vie for promotion to the Premier League.
