Mohamed Salah's wish for Jordan Henderson to receive a proper farewell from Liverpool supporters was fulfilled on Sunday as the midfielder returned to Anfield for the first time since his controversial departure nearly three years ago. Henderson, now playing for Brentford, was given a standing ovation by the home crowd when he was substituted off in the 60th minute.
The former Liverpool captain, who led the club to Champions League and Premier League titles, left for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in 2023 without a formal goodbye. Upon his return, Reds fans, players, and manager Arne Slot applauded him. After the match, Henderson took a lap of appreciation around the stadium, clapping to all four stands.
Salah had publicly called for a special reception earlier this month, telling Steven Gerrard in an interview: 'I really wish they do something special for him because he has been one of the best players at this club.' Gerrard echoed the sentiment, urging fans to show their appreciation.
Henderson's move to Saudi Arabia lasted only six months before he joined Ajax, where he spent 18 months. He returned to the Premier League this summer with Brentford. The midfielder previously admitted he struggled after leaving Liverpool, saying it 'felt like a break-up' and that he could not bear to watch his former club on television.
