Prince Harry has alleged that racism was a significant factor in his and Meghan Markle's decision to leave the UK, and that the Queen was too occupied to meet him, according to unseen clips from his interview with Oprah Winfrey.
In the footage, Harry said he was told by an unidentified individual at a charity event that 'the UK is very bigoted,' though he countered that it was the tabloid press, not the country, that was bigoted. He added that if the source of information is 'corrupt or racist or biased, then that filters out to the rest of society.'
Harry also claimed that after the couple announced their intention to step down as senior royals, the Queen initially wanted to invite them to Sandringham but was overruled by aides. He said he later called her and she told him, 'Yes, there's something in my diary that I didn't know that I had,' suggesting she was not fully aware of the cancellation.
The Duke of Sussex refused to identify who made a comment about the potential darkness of Archie's skin, but Oprah confirmed it was not the Queen or Prince Philip. Prime Minister Boris Johnson declined to comment on the royal family matters, expressing only admiration for the Queen.
The interview has sparked backlash from Tory MPs, who described the accusations as 'appalling' and akin to 'detonating a nuclear weapon.' Meghan also discussed her estranged relationship with her half-sister Samantha, stating she 'didn't have a relationship' with her.
