Gianluca Prestianni has been handed a six-match ban by Uefa for what the governing body described as 'homophobic' behaviour, with three of those games suspended and one already served. The disciplinary sanction stems from an incident during a Champions League fixture in February, in which Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr alleged that Prestianni racially abused him.
Uefa Investigation and Ruling
Uefa launched an inquiry into 'discriminatory behaviour' following the complaint made by Vinicius Jr. After a thorough investigation, the European football authority concluded that Prestianni had engaged in homophobic conduct, though the player has consistently denied the accusations of using racist language.
Ban Details
The ban includes a total of six matches, with three suspended and one already served during the return leg of the Champions League play-off two months prior to Friday's announcement. This means Prestianni will miss a further two matches as a result of the ruling.
Prestianni, who plays for Benfica at the time of the incident, has maintained his innocence throughout the process. The incident has reignited discussions about discrimination in football and the measures taken by governing bodies to address such behaviour.
