A supermarket own-label chocolate bar has emerged as a surprising winner in a blind taste test, beating Cadbury Dairy Milk in both flavour and value for money. The taste test, conducted by a self-proclaimed chocolate connoisseur with a serious sweet tooth, pitted eight different milk chocolate bars against each other to find the best supermarket own-brand option.
The Contenders
The eight chocolate bars tested were Cadbury Dairy Milk, Galaxy Smooth Milk Chocolate, and own-brand bars from Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, M&S, and Waitrose. Each bar was judged on four criteria: chocolatey-ness, sweetness balance, texture, and value for money.
Cadbury Dairy Milk (160g, £3)
Cadbury Dairy Milk scored 9.5 out of 10, praised for its rich, velvety, and creamy taste. However, its high price of £3 for only 160g was a drawback. At 534 kcal per 100g, it wasn't the most calorific bar.
Galaxy Smooth Milk Chocolate (100g, £2.45)
Galaxy scored 9 out of 10, offering a unique, rich flavour but with poor value for money at £2.45 for just 100g (544 kcal per 100g). Some found it too sickeningly sweet.
Tesco Milk Chocolate (200g, £2.30)
Tesco's bar was the least favourite, scoring 4.5 out of 10. It was too sweet (552 kcal per 100g), lacked creamy texture, and tasted cheap.
Waitrose Belgian Milk Chocolate (180g, £3.50)
Waitrose scored 7.5 out of 10, with a dark-chocolate flavour (32% cocoa solids) and good balance. At 538 kcal per 100g, it was the second least calorific. It tasted rich and expensive.
ASDA Milk Chocolate (200g, £2.28)
ASDA scored 5 out of 10, being too sweet (555 kcal per 100g) and lacking in flavour and texture. It was the most affordable bar.
Sainsbury's Milk Chocolate (200g, £2.30)
Sainsbury's scored 6 out of 10, bordering on too sweet (546 kcal per 100g) but with decent texture. It was a decent budget buy.
Morrisons Milk Chocolate (200g, £2.30)
Morrisons scored 8 out of 10, surprising the taster with its balanced flavour and creamy texture. At 553 kcal per 100g, it was a strong budget alternative to Cadbury.
M&S Choc Marks Milk Chocolate (180g, £3.70)
M&S scored 8.5 out of 10, being the most expensive but thick, milky, and not too sweet. At 567 kcal per 100g, it was the most calorific. A husband who hates milk chocolate came back for seconds.
The Winner
The overall winner was Morrisons Milk Chocolate, which tasted as good as Cadbury Dairy Milk but cost 70p less and offered 40g more chocolate. It delivered a surprisingly good balance of sweetness and creaminess at a budget price.
